Environmental protection in and around the Port of Taichung

(For more information, please call 886-4-26642307,26642351,26642352 Environmental Protection Division.)
  1. The harbor area-wind beack foliageTaichung Harbor is a man-made harbor in the central part of the west coast of Taiwan. Due to environmental effects, during the monsoon season there is continuous sandy wind. At the beginning of the construction of the port, windbreak foliage was required and the implementation of forestation was very important.
  2. Due to the special rectangular shape of the harbor (length 7 ~ 8 km, width 0.5km), it resembles a bag and is a blocked-off sea area. The sea water exchange situation is not good from either the inside or outside of the harbor. The pollution is not easy to dilute or expend, and with the 12 large and middle sized discharging rivers in the neighboring towns, the industrial waste water and foul water from the residences all goes into the harbor without treatment for a long period. This has caused the quality of the water in the harbor to be poor.
  3. The primary responsibilities of the Bureau’s Environment Protection Division is to prevent damages to the harbor brought by natural wind and sand, to create a comfortable working environment and to prevent any unlawful man-made environmental damages.
  4. The Environmental Protection Center was set up on July 1, 1994 to implement all environmental protection activities. According to the organization charter of the Taichung Harbor Bureau promulgated under the Presidential Office document number 09100018990, dated on January 21, 2001, the agency was renamed Environmental Protection Division, where the chief responsibilities include:
    ● Environment planning and greenery beautification of the harbor area.
    ● Pollution prevention and containment in the harbor area.
    ● Cleaning and maintenance of the harbor area.
  5. After years of efforts in forestation, cleaning and maintenance, pollution containment and prevention, the current harbor area is filled with beautiful greenery and the harbor water quality has improved to attain Category B of Water Quality Standards.
