The boundaries of the Port of Taichung are thus: The northern boundary is the south beach of Ta-Chia stream, the southern boundary is the north beach of Ta-Tu stream, eastern boundary is Ling Kung Road, and western boundary is the Taiwan Strait. The length of the port is 12.5 KM, width is 2.5 ~ 4.5 KM, the area is 3793 hectares, among them the land area is 2820 hectares, and the water area is 973 hectares; this includes three parts to execute the construction of business port, industrial port and fishing port.
There are three parts of the first construction plan. The first part of the construction began on Oct 31 1973, and was finished on Oct 31 1976. The second and the third parts of the construction plan were finished in 1973 and 1983.
Due to the fast increase in business volume, the secondary construction plan was done in cooperation with Taiwan Construction in order to meet the expanding requirements of the port. There are forty-nine running wharves, consisting of eight container wharves, one passenger wharf, two grain wharves, four coal wharves, eight liquid wharves, three cement wharves, twenty-one general cargo wharves, one LNG wharf and one waste steel wharf. There are many different warehouses which include 12 miscellaneous goods warehouses, 22 cement silos, 8 good yards, 3 container yards, 259 liquid tanks. The Port of Taichung provides a good investment environment; All the warehouse businesses are open to private investment companies. The Port of Taichung has fully automatic equipment for warehouse operations, with high efficiency standards.
