2009 Taiwan-US Round Table Meeting of Cleaner Port Partnership was held on March 3, 2009 at the Taichung Harbor Bureau. The meeting invited US experts, led by Mr. Mark S. Kasman, a senior advisor in the USEPA in charge of supervising cooperation programs in the Asia-Pacific region, to attend the meeting. Local international shipping companies, Evergreen Marine Group, Yang Mine Marine Transportation Corp., Wan Hai Lines, Ltd., as well as terminal relative industries also sent senior officers to the meeting. More than 80 participants participated in the meeting, exchanging information about the technology and strategy of air quality improvement in the ports area. The meeting also sought bilateral cooperation topics to achieve economic prosperity and environmental sustainability of ports between Taiwan and Northwest coast of the US.
In his opening remarks, Director General Chun Yu Wang mentioned that the greener port strategy is to make full use of Taiwan’s regional geographic advantage and lay a foundation for the island’s future competitiveness, through terminal logistics and shipping management. It is necessary to collaborate between public and private sectors of ocean-going shipping, terminal operations, logistic arrangements, energy savings and renewables in port areas locally and internationally to make “Green Port” achievable. President Ma’s “energy saving and carbon reduction policy” should be actively implemented to create green and prosperous opportunities for the shipping and harbor industries.
It would simply not be possible to effectively achieve cleaner air quality. The development of Taichung Port holds a key position within this concept; the development, and the development of surrounding special zones, has a complementary relationship. The continuous development of the “Green Port” will be promoted so as to lead the land development and socioeconomic activity in the port area.
Director General Wang remarked that of the four international commercial ports in Taiwan, Taichung Port is the largest in terms of land area and still bears a large land area for further development. “Green Port” concept will hold a key position of the Taichung Port development, such as terminal development, and the development of surrounding special zones, and their complementary relationship. He would like to promote the Taichung Port’s continuous development of the “Green Port” so as to promote land development and socioeconomic activities in the port area.
