Port of Taichung, a man-made port carved from a barren stretch of shallow shore on the west coast of central Taiwan, is a rather new international port. It is about 110 nautical mile voyage from Keelung Port to the north and Kaohsiung Port to the south respectively. |
 |
Taichung Port was projected to cope with the fast growing needs of the national economic development. Since the 1960s, Taiwan has vigorously striven for economic reconstruction. Foreign trade has rapidly increased and the two existing ports, Keelung and Kaohsiung, had gradually become congested. Hence the need for a new international port became imperative. After several years of study and surveys, Taichung Port was finally set to be constructed as a new international port. It would not only take off the pressure from the two existing shipping centers, but could in the meantime provide a gateway to central Taiwan to help promote balanced regional development.
Taichung Port Project called for a commercial port, an industrial port and a fishing port. It launched operation in 1976 after intensive construction.
At present, there are 50 deep-water wharves completely installed. With the most automatic and efficient equipment, the cargo handled in 2009 was over 89 million tons (including containers 1.19 million TEUs). By keeping the operational concept of Taichung Port in mind-- "Strengthening port business by cooperation and coordination, offering best services by active engagement and involvement", and working with experienced personnel, a significant annual growth rate can be anticipated in the coming years.
The future development project consists of a commercial port expansion plan and an industrial port development plan. It will be carried out according to the pace of international marine transportation development. The ultimate goal of Taichung Port Project is to build the port as a multipurpose port, possessing a commercial port with 83 deep-water wharves.
