Back in the period of Ching dynasty busy traffic already existed between the prosperous town of Wuci and the most representative harbor towns like Chunzhou, Xiamen and some others, and the Wuci harbor was renamed “Port Shingao” for its excellent geographic location during the period of Japanese occupation. After the Retrocession our government aggressively boosted the economic development, and the “Preparatory Office for the Construction of Taichung Harbor” was funded in the 1969 with high expectations from all fields. In 1976, the Taichung Harbor began its official operation with a development goal to becoming a modern all-around harbor with industrial, commercial and fishery functions. It had become one of the brightest stars of the 10 Major Construction Projects completed by our own people and is also the first man-made international harbor of the island Formosa.
“Struggling through 30 years of surge, the phoenix is still residing gorgeously on its parasol tree”. Over the thirty years, our ancestors worked diligently to build our first and largest domestic international harbor that was operated by the locals. Foot set on the center of Formosa, with a leap to the world.

Like the first glimmering of the morning sun, with its growing economic ray, Taiwan is shinning to the world. The island of Formosa is surrounded by sea and the Taichung harbor is located at the center of the west coast, beginning from the north at the Dajia River and extending south to the Dadu River. It is approximately 110 sea miles away from the Keelung Port and 120 sea miles away from the Kaohsiung Port, it has a proper external traffic connection system which can quickly link to the provincial roads, the west coast expressway, the national highway and the near-by international airport. The Taichung Harbor is not only the largest international commercial harbor in the central Taiwan but also the main harbor of out country for the import of major energy, heavy industry and petro-chemical raw materials. Building an Integrated Harbor, Managing the Globe, and Marketing Taiwan

From port entrance, fairway, turning basin and wharfs to the tourist service center, working docks and mechanical repairing factories, the multifunction offered at the Taichung Harbor today ensure that all operations in the harbor are completed with advanced computerized system and that modern operational facilities are available to provide high quality hardware and software services.

The delicate and comprehensive design of the Taichung Harbor is able to accommodate a total of 83 large-scale wharfs including container docks, general cargo docks, bulk, charcoal, grain, cement, piping, and passenger docks. Currently, the annual operation volume has already exceeded 9,000 tons.

『 Taichung Port, one of Taiwan’s Ten Major Construction Projects during the 70’s, launched its first sail since October 31st, 1976. Its total area up to 3760 ha. is the biggest among the others in Taiwan. At present, there are 48 wharfs, 17 specialized zones and 3 free trade port zones.
Characterized by broad lands and convenient transportation, Taichung Port is quite fit for BOT projects and development of free trade zone.
Free trade zone of Taichung Port has begun its operation since October 2005. Currently, up to 20 enterprises have made investment and started operation. Furthermore, both the trade value and volume of cargo (including exports and imports) are on the increase and continue to soar.
Accordingly, the total volume of cargo handled in 2006 set a record high point of 90.32 million metric tons, surpassing 90 million metric tons for the first time and is optimistically expected to reach the milestone of 100 million metric tons after those BOT projects start to operate.
